Interesting property about the Dominant Function

I think I just found an interesting property of the Dominant function. (To recap quickly, the Dominant function is a person's leading function).

I've noticed that for information related to a person's Dominant function, the person wants to control that information. He wants to control the rate at which the information is flowing, what sort of information, and manipulate that information.

Couple examples:
  • INFp: she wants to control the way she spends her time. She wants to control the flow of events in time.
  • ENTp: he wants to control the way he explores new information. He wants to control exactly what information he wants to explore, and he'll learn something only if he's interested in it.
If you're interested in how this observation would play out for other types, let me know in the comments below and I can add it!

2 comments:

  1. Si: wants to control own internal physical state.
ISFp: Oriented towards achieving a more pleasurable, calming internal state
ISTp: optimization of internal state to retain a more composed, effective demeanor

Ne: Agreed. Although I think the focus of Ne is connecting information, but you need to pick what to learn before that part.
ENFp: Investigate the connections between disparate topics to forge more real, authentic experiences with others. ENFps love exploring the depths of other people, stories, sentimental things (not Hallmark. strong distaste for Hallmark.)
ENTp: Investigate the connections between disparate topics to build better new systems and theories. King of "let's try it/look at it another way".

    Se: Direct action
ESFp: Looks for ways to directly affect the world around them; biased towards accumulating a medley of contrasting experiences. Tends to manifest more in interactions with people and trying out new lifestyles. Very enterprising in this area. Eager to meet many types of people and make a direct lasting impression that won’t be forgotten.
ESTp: Looks for ways to directly affect the world around them; biased towards accumulating a medley of contrasting experiences. Not sure how to define the rest. Seems less people based and more adrenaline rush type deal? I feel like that’s missing the point though…that feels like a stereotype. Fi PoLR might be throwing people off. I don’t know any SLEs irl closely (oh well!)

Ni: Something about that description feels off to me...what about emphasis on development?
INFp: wants to control the development of the atmosphere around them; will rouse people up and do what they can to create an excitable environment; uses ironic comments to create a more lighthearted, open place
INTp: wants to control the development of organization around them; likes to search for new ways to re-create their surroundings to be more effective and efficient; tend to excel in management and resource planning because of this (even if they might be a little quiet and not as “actively motivating”)

    Fun game :D

    1. Interesting. If I could interject some thoughts, it would be on the nature of "Ne". (Maybe I should write a blog post about this...anyway)...

I wouldn't say that Ne is about _connecting_ information, much as it is about generating _any_ information. In a word, Ne would be imagination. Ne is also not just about generating new ideas, but about anything that the mind is curious about, such as imagining scenarios -- _any_ scenario -- and just wondering what would play out.

Then, to help explore the "imaginations", Ti comes in to help Ne. An ENTp would exhibit Ti by categorizing these imaginations into logical rules, or perhaps logically indicating where imaginations are "legally" allowed to go.

As an example of how Ne-Ti might be exhibited in a real person, just look at Einstein. Einstein generated tons of thought experiments (Ne -- "imaginations"), and then logically (Ti) came to the now-famous conclusions about special relativity, etc.
